Property guide

Please note that this is a self check-in property.

We hope you will enjoy your stay. If you have any problems or questions during your stay, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Please bear in mind that these are our house rules:

  • Smoking is not allowed indoors or on balconies
  • Please do not throw cigarettes and mouth tobacco pouches on or from balconies and in front of the building
  • Pets are not allowed
  • No parties or events allowed
  • Guests are expected to leave the apartment in a decent condition

There is no free parking available by the property.

We recommend parking the car in a parking house at Traðarkot (paid parking) which is located at Hverfisgata 20. The walking distance from the parking house to Ice Apartments is under 2 minutes.

Please note that the parking house is closed between midnight (00:00) until 7:00 in the morning so you are unable to retrieve your car between those hours.

You can then walk from the side of the parking house (where the payment machine is) and you’ll see the Ice Apartments straight in front of you.

The street parking around the house is pay zone P1.

P1: It is free from 21:00/9PM until 09:00/9AM (10:00/10AM on Sundays).
Please note that you can only park for 3 hours in P1.

After that you will be fined, so P1 can not be used for long-term parking. For long-term parking we therefore recommend P2 or P3.

For free parking we recommend parking the car by Tækniskólinn at Frakkastígur 27, right next to Hallgrímskirkja church. It is busy during school days but there should be more available parking spots during the night/evenings.

Please note that the area around the church (blue area) is paid parking.

You might also find some free parking in the streets close to the church, or by driving further away from the shopping streets downtown.

You can also pay for parking at the closeby streets or the parking garages Traðarkot or Stjörnuport, but please note that the parking houses are closed between midnight and 7 AM, so you will not be able to pick up your car there during the night.

You can see the parking prices in Reykjavik and a map of the parking zones here.

We recommend using the Parka app to pay for parking.

Feel free to use our free Wi-Fi during your stay.

There is a Smart box with streaming services connected to the TV.

If you don’t have an account for Netflix and you need access, please contact us for login information. Otherwise you can log into your account to Netflix or other streaming services.

There is no designated locked room for your luggage.

However, there is good luggage storage  at the BSÍ bus-station and one in the Traðarkot parking garage, which is only a 2 minutes walking distance.

As an alternative, you can drop off your luggage under the stairs in the hallway (not by rooms 001 and 002) but it is not locked and we do not take responsibility for the luggage kept there. Anyone staying in the building has access to it there.

Any common waste is collected in a trash bag located in the kitchen. When the bag is full you can throw it in the garbage cans that are located on the lot, in front of the house.

Please sort the waste into these 2 categories:

General waste / “Blandaður úrgangur” is for all general waste.

Paper and plastic is for all plastics, both soft and hard, and all paper material.

  • Soft plastics are for example plastic bags, plastic film and bubble plastic.
Hard plastics are containers of all sorts, for example yogurt boxes, plastic trays, and shampoo containers. Rinse all food and chemicals from plastics before placing them in the bin.

  • Paper material can be: Cartons, newspapers, magazines, and all packaging made from cartons, such as milk and juice cartons. Rinse all food from the materials and compress them to make room for more.

If there is a sleeping sofa in your apartment, you’ll find instructions for it here.

If you need to open the sleeping sofa, here is a video with instructions on how to do that.
First you need to remove all the cushions from the sofa.

You then pull the back of the sofa forward, until the bed is open and the mattress is fully flattened out.

If you need to close the sleeping sofa, here is a video with instructions on how to do that.
You need to make sure the mattress is placed within the mattress frame before closing it. If you have any issues closing the sofa, it is possible that you need to pull the mattress towards you before trying to close it again.

Feel free to use the washing machine in the kitchen as much as needed, but please do not use it during the night to show respect to other guests. You can find washing detergent under the sink in the kitchen.

Add washing liquid in the compartment on the left side of the drawer, choose a program by rotating the large rounded button and push the button with the “start/pause” symbol to start the your chosen washing program.

You can choose the desired spin cycle. We recommend max 1200 to protect your laundry (less for synthetics).

30°C is approximately 85°F and 40-60°C is 104-140°F.

Drying only:

Select a spin cycle at the maximum spin speed for the type of laundry in order to obtain the best drying performances.

Choose either “Drying cottons” or “Drying synthetics” with the rotating button.

Then choose either “Auto-dry” (push the button until it shows the desired drying degree) or “Drying time” to dry for a certain amount of time. Every time you push this button it increases the drying time by 5 minutes.

Push the “Start/pause” button to start drying.

Washing and drying:

Choose the washing program with the rotating button. You can not change the spin cycle speed until you’ve selected drying.
The machine will recommend the spin speed that decreases drying time and therefore saves energy.

Select the drying time with the “Drying time” button. Every time you push this button it increases the drying time by 5 minutes.

Push the “Start/pause” button to start drying.

There is a regular drip coffee maker in your apartment.

How to use:

Fill the water tank with cold water (see lines that show how many cups you will get).

Open the coffee basket and add the coffee filter inside.

Add grounded coffee to the coffee filter and place the basket back inside the machine. A good ratio of coffee is 2-3 tablespoons of coffee per cup of water.

Turn the machine on and wait until it’s done dripping.

There is a dishwasher in your apartment.

Please remember to use ONLY specific tablets for a dishwasher. Do NOT use the dishwashing liquid in the dishwasher machine.

To turn the dishwasher on, press the on/off button (large button) and choose the program you want to use with the up ⌃and down ⌄ arrows. You’ll see on the screen which program you have chosen and on the left side of the screen you’ll see an overview of the program options.

The dishwasher will start the program automatically when you close it.

If you have any problems with using the dishwasher, please contact us.

There is a microwave in your apartment on the kitchenette counter.

Turn the upper knob to choose the desired power and the lower knob to choose the heating time. The microwave will start automatically when the time has been chosen.

If you have any problems with using the microwave, please contact us.

There is a hob/stove top, with 2 burners, in your apartment.

To turn the hob/stove on/off please touch the power sign for 1 second.

Increase the power on the desired burner by touching the + (plus) sign and decrease it by touching the - (minus) sign. Please make sure you are adjusting the power for the right burner.

Please remember to turn the stove off after using it.

If you have any problems with using the stove, please contact us.

On the kitchen counter you’ll find a regular water kettle.

Please do NOT use the kettle for anything else than water.

There is a Burlington shower valve, with a rain head and handheld head in your apartment.

Turn the knob in the middle to control the temperature.

The upper shaft turns the rain head on/off and the lower shaft turns the handheld head on/off.

If you feel that the water has a strange smell, it's because of the sulfur in the geothermal water, which is used as warm water in most houses in Iceland.

If you have a problem opening the windows, here is a video that shows how to do that.

Please note that you first need to unhook the side hooks before opening the window with the handle in the middle of the window.

If you have a problem opening or closing the balcony doors, here is a video that shows how to do that.

When you close the doors, make sure that the doors are closed in the correct order, closing the door with the larger door edge first.

If you have difficulties with switching on the bathroom light and ventilation, please do the following:

- Try moving your hand under the sensor on the wall next to the door. If this doesn’t turn the light on you’ll need to do the following:

- Unplug the sensor from the socket. Under the sensor there is a button. There are 3 options: to move the button to “off”, “on” or auto (in the middle). We recommend locating it at auto, so the light turns on automatically when you enter the bathroom and turns off when there is no movement in the bathroom.

If you are trying to switch on the lights in the living room, please push the dimmer in order to turn them on.

Check out is at 10:00/10AM.

Guests are expected to leave the apartment in a decent condition.
We would appreciate if you would start the dishwasher with all dirty dishes, glasses and cutlery before you leave.

Make sure you take all your belongings with you when checking out.
Please consider other guests when checking out early.
Guests are responsible for any damages incurred during their stay.
Guests are at risk of paying an extra fee in case of violations of our rental policies. See policies here.

If you need extra things during your stay such as fresh towels, linens, toilet paper etc. there is a closet in the stairway in front of the apartments (apartments 001 and 002 will need to enter the upper floor entrances) with additional items. Please feel free to help yourself.

If you don’t find what you need, please contact us.

Please note that the closet has a mirror. You need to open this sliding mirror-door to see what you’re looking for.

If you want to check in earlier or check out later, this is possible in some cases for a small fee. Please contact us to get more information.

If the Fire alarm in the building is set off and it is ringing, please do the following:

1.Find the fire alarm panel.

The fire alarm panel is in the basement where apartment 001 is. If you are not staying in 001 you can use the same code as you used for your front door.

2.Please Press:

(STÖÐVA) to stop the alarm and then
(STÖÐVA BILUNARVÆLU) to stop the beeping

If the alarm continues to go off please make sure there is no fire in the house and contact us.

Most of Iceland’s houses are heated by geothermal water. The water runs through the radiators heating up the cast iron and warming up the place.

To adjust the settings of a radiator you must turn the knob to a higher or lower setting. The knob is usually located on either side of the radiator.

Note that it takes a little while for the radiators to get hot so don’t put them on full blast just yet. In fact, setting it to 2-3 is usually enough for a radiator that goes up to 5. For a radiator that goes up to 8 the normal setting is about 4-5. Adjusting the setting any higher can lead to rooms getting steamy and the radiators to start emitting heat smell.

In Iceland we have the standard Europlug, a flat, two-pole, round-pin domestic AC power plug, rated for voltages up to 250 V and currents up to 2.5 A.

For these plugs, you can use adapter types “C” or “F”. These are often labeled as a Northern Europe adapter.

95% of all water in Iceland comes from springs in the ground, so it never comes in touch with any pollution. Unlike in many neighboring countries, the Icelandic water is free of chlorine, calcium and nitrate. It contains sulfur, which sometimes gives an egg smell when you use the hot water.

The quality of tap water in Reykjavík is well monitored, so you are not to worry about drinking directly from the tap, as Icelandic water is one of the purest water you’ll find in the world.

It can take a little while for the water to heat up and get colder, so please let the water run for a moment if the temperature is not how you’d like it to be.

Alcohol is quite expensive in Iceland and can only be bought at state run stores called Vínbúðin. The DutyFree store at the airport is a lot cheaper (you will see all the Icelanders go straight there). If you plan on purchasing alcohol, we recommend doing that before picking up your bags at the airport.

Don’t be fooled by the “beer” you see at local supermarkets. Those are light beers with only 0-2% alcohol.

People under the age of 20 are not allowed to buy alcohol of any kind in Iceland.

Just a kind reminder: No parties are allowed at the apartment.

There are a number of grocery stores close to the Ice Apartments. The closest ones are the Corner market and 10/11, both in a 3 minute walking distance. Both of these stores are a fairly expensive option but they have longer opening hours.

You’ll also find Bónus in a 7 minute walking distance. This is usually the cheapest option.
