Property guide

Please note that this is a self check-in property.

We hope you will enjoy your stay. If you have any problems or questions during your stay, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.

Please bear in mind that these are our house rules:

  • Smoking is not allowed indoors or on balconies
  • Please do not throw cigarettes and mouth tobacco pouches on or from balconies and in front of the building
  • Pets are not allowed
  • No parties or events allowed
  • Guests are expected to leave the apartment in a decent condition

There is no free dedicated parking spot for the apartment.

The street parking around the city and around the house is pay zone P1.

P1: It is free from 21:00/9PM until 09:00/9AM (10:00/10AM on Sundays).

Please note that you can only park for 3 hours in P1. After that you will be fined, so P1 can not be used for long-term parking. For long-term parking we therefore recommend P2 or P3.

For free parking we recommend parking the car by Tækniskólinn at Frakkastígur 27, right next to Hallgrímskirkja church. It is busy during school days but there should be more available parking spots during the night/evenings.

Please note that the area around the church (blue area) is paid parking.

You might also find some free parking in the streets close to the church, or by driving further away from the shopping streets downtown.

You can also pay for parking at the closeby streets or the parking garages Traðarkot or Stjörnuport, but please note that the parking houses are closed between midnight and 7 AM, so you will not be able to pick up your car there during the night.

You can see the parking prices in Reykjavik and a map of the parking zones here

We recommend using the Parka app to pay for parking

We have an open wifi network called “Idunn Apartments”. There is no password, you only have to accept the terms in the browser when it pops up.

Alternatively you can use our other network:

Username: Heimaleiga
Password: EnjoyYourStay.

If the Wi-Fi stops working you can try to restart the router by unplugging it from power, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in. If that doesn’t help please let us know.

We don’t have any satellite channels available.

Please use your own account to watch these streaming services.

If you don’t have a Netflix account and need access, please contact us.

We can not guarantee availability, as the account can only be watched on limited number of screens at the same time.

There is no designated locked room for your luggage.

However, you can store your luggage in the basement. Please note that it's not a locked room and we do not take responsibility for luggage kept there.

There is also a good luggage storage at the BSÍ bus-station and one in the Traðarkot parking garage.

Any common waste is collected in a trash bag located in the kitchen. When the bag is full you can throw it in the garbage cans that are located at the back of the house.

Please use the bins marked with “Heimalega” sticker.

Gray/black is for general waste.

Blue is for all paper and carton, newspapers, magazines, and all packaging made from cartons, such as milk and juice cartons. Rinse all food from the materials and compress them to make room for more. Do not put any plastics into the blue bin.

Green is for all plastics, both soft and hard. Soft plastics are for example plastic bags, plastic film and bubble plastic. Hard plastics are containers of all sorts, for example yogurt boxes, plastic trays, and shampoo containers. Rinse all food and chemicals from plastics before placing them in the bin.

The brown bin is for food waste. Food waste is collected in a specific paper bag (this can be found for free in Bonus, if you don’t find one in the apartment and you’d like to sort this way). We recommend that you dispose of this bag every 2-3 days and do not throw very moist/wet food waste in it.

If you need a washer and dryer during your stay with us, there is a communal laundry room in the basement with washer and dryer.

Please go down to the basement by the stairs, turn left when you enter the basement and the laundry room will be on your left side in the hallway.

Please do not use the washing machine or the dryer before 9 o’clock in the morning and after 10 o’clock (22:00) in the evening.

Communal laundry room - instructions.

Open the drawer on the left of the rounded button and insert the washing liquid in the compartment on the left side of the drawer.

To turn the washing machine on/off, push the Kveikt/Slökkt button.

Choose a program by rotating the large rounded button.

“Aðalþvottur” means regular wash, “Straufrítt” is iron free, “Viðkvæmt” is sensitive and “Sportklæði” is sport clothes. You can also use the “20 min – 3 kg” for a short cycle.

Push the “Kveikt/Hlé” (start/pause) button on the screen to start the chosen program.

You can change the temperature with the “Hitastig” button and the spinning with the “Vinding” button on the screen. The screen will show you what program you have chosen.

30°C is approximately 85°F and 40-60°C is 104-140°F.

To turn the tumble dryer on/off, push the power button. Choose a program by rotating the large rounded button. Push the button with the “start/pause” symbol to start your chosen drying program.

You can also choose a specific time (60 min or 90 min) and choose drying for more sensitive clothing with the buttons on the screen.

After drying, please open the water container on the left of the rounded button and empty it.

Also, please clean the filter inside the dryer.

There is a Senseo coffee machine in your apartment.

How it works

To turn the machine on, press the on/off button. The indicator light blinks while the water is heating up. Heating up takes approx. 90 seconds. The coffee machine is ready for use when the indicator light burns continuously.

Move the lever upwards to release and open the lid. Place the coffee pod properly in the center of the pod holder, with the more bulky side pointing downwards.

Close the lid and lock the lever.

Place the cup under the spout openings.

Press the button with the one cup icon and the coffee machine starts brewing your delightful coffee.

After use, lift the pod holder out of the machine and remove the coffee pod(s).

There is a dishwasher in your apartment.

Please remember to use ONLY specific tablets for a dishwasher. Do NOT use the dishwashing liquid in the dishwasher machine.

If you have any problems with using the dishwasher, please contact us.

There is a hob/stove top, with 4 burners, in your apartment.

If you have any problems with using the hob, please contact us

There is an oven in your apartment.

The controls on the oven allow you to choose between several types of cooking and the temperature of the oven. 150°C is around 300°F and 200°C is around 390°F.

If you don’t see rounded knobs to control the program and heat, you might have to push them first, so they “pop out”. You should then be able to turn them in both directions.

Please remember to turn the oven off after cooking.

If you have any problems with using the oven, please contact us and tell us what type/brand of oven is in your apartment.

There is a traditional water kettle in one of the kitchen cabinets.

Please do NOT use the kettle for anything else than water.

If a fire alarm goes off, and it’s not coming from your apartment, please leave the premises and wait until the alarm goes off, or the issue has been resolved in another way.

If the fire alarm goes off, and it is coming from your apartment (smoke from toaster etc), please open the windows, to ventilate the apartment.

If there is a fire in the apartment, please leave the premises and call 112.

Most of Iceland’s houses are heated by geothermal water. The water runs through the radiators heating up the cast iron and warming up the place.

To adjust the settings of a radiator you must turn the knob to a higher or lower setting. The knob is usually located on either side of the radiator.

Note that it takes a little while for the radiators to get hot so don’t put them on full blast just yet. In fact, setting it to 2-3 is usually enough for a radiator that goes up to 5. For a radiator that goes up to 8 the normal setting is about 4-5. Adjusting the setting any higher can lead to rooms getting steamy and the radiators to start emitting heat smell.

In Iceland we have the standard Europlug, a flat, two-pole, round-pin domestic AC power plug, rated for voltages up to 250 V and currents up to 2.5 A.

For these plugs, you can use adapter types “C” or “F”. These are often labeled as a Northern Europe adapter.

95% of all water in Iceland comes from springs in the ground, so it never comes in touch with any pollution. Unlike in many neighboring countries, the Icelandic water is free of chlorine, calcium and nitrate. It contains sulfur, which sometimes gives an egg smell when you use the hot water.

The quality of tap water in Reykjavík is well monitored, so you are not to worry about drinking directly from the tap, as Icelandic water is one of the purest water you’ll find in the world.

Alcohol is quite expensive in Iceland and can only be bought at state run stores called Vínbúðin. The DutyFree store at the airport is a lot cheaper (you will see all the Icelanders go straight there). If you plan on purchasing alcohol, we recommend doing that before picking up your bags at the airport.

Don’t be fooled by the “beer” you see at local supermarkets. Those are light beers with only 0-2% alcohol.

People under the age of 20 are not allowed to buy alcohol of any kind in Iceland.

Just a kind reminder: No parties are allowed at the apartment.

There are a number of grocery stores close to Iðunn Apartments. The closest one is Bónus, a 2 minute walking distance. This is usually the cheapest option.

You’ll also find Extra and Krambúð, a 5 minute walking distance. They have longer opening hours.
