Who we are
Heimaleiga is an Icelandic family company founded in 2017.
The whole team at Heimaleiga is focused on making our guests feel comfortable staying with us, so they can feel at home. That is why we chose the name Heimaleiga for our company. The Icelandic word “Heimaleiga” means home rent. We offer a variety of properties in Iceland, so everyone can find a short-term accommodation that feels like home, while on vacation.
Our story
The Melax family starts renting out family members’ homes. They quickly see the opportunity in contactless self check-in, as opposed to waiting at a reception desk.
The first summer employee is hired to help out with the increasing number of rentals.
Heimaleiga is officially founded, Sölvi Melax leaves his previous startup adventures to put full focus on Heimaleiga. The first full-time employees start working for the company and by the end of the year Heimaleiga onboards the first multi-apartment property, Icelandic Comfort Apartments. Adding this complex, Heimaleiga is now servicing 70 apartments.
Heimaleiga creates the first large serviced apartment complex from scratch, SIF apartments, which is the first of its kind in Iceland. The company is involved in the process from sales of the apartments to investors, designing the apartments and getting them ready for guests.
In 2019, 150 apartments are rented out with a majority of single apartments owned by individuals.
Covid19 hits and the majority of owners of single apartments are forced to leave Heimaleiga, due to decrease in demand in short-term rental.
The team decides to work on projects that will strengthen the foundation of the company and allow Heimaleiga to provide even better service. Other large projects are taken on, such as Blue Mountain Apartments and AVA apartments. Heimaleiga partners up with Guesty, a software developed specifically for short-term rental operations.
From 2020, all new projects are fully licensed properties owned by professional investors, and rented out all year round.
The owners of Heimaleiga see the importance of having operations in-house, for optimized service. In addition to having all cleaning and maintenance in-house, they invest in a professional laundry facility, located in the same housing as the Icelandic office at Grensásvegur 14. In 2022, Heimaleiga cleans 11,592 apartments.
The exciting journey of Heimaleiga continues, with a growing team, and the company has new exciting projects in the pipelines! But we never forget about our main focus: to make guests feel comfortable staying with us, so they can feel at home.
