Should you rent a car here is a link to google maps with directions from the airport to Landeyjahöfn, where the ferry usually departs

In the case you’d need to depart from Þorlákshöfn (see further information here) these are the directions from the airport to Þorlákshöfn.

FlyBus from KEF airport to Reykjavik

If you are not planning on renting a car, the most common and best way for small groups is the FlyBus from Keflavik International Airport. You have two FlyBus options, the regular FlyBus, which takes you to the central bus station at BSÍ and the FlyBus+, which drops you off at a selected location. You can book FlyBus here

You can then take a public transport bus from Reykjavik to the harbor where the ferry takes you to the Westman Islands.

Public bus from KEF airport to Reykjavik

The public bus nr. 55 travels regularly throughout the day from the airport to the capital area. Please note that the bus does not always drive all the way to BSI bus station, downtown Reykjavik. In those cases the last stop is at Fjörður, in Hafnarfjörður, which is a town just outside Reykjavik. Learn more.

You can see the prices for bus nr. 55 here

Taxi from KEF airport to Reykjavik

Please note that while this is the fastest way of commuting from the airport, Taxi is also the most expensive one.

The price for 1-4 people is 16.500 ISK and 21.500 ISK for 5-8 persons (this price can vary – price collected November 2022).

How to get to the Westman Islands

You can either fly from Reykjavik airport or sail with Herjolfur ferry, from Landeyjahöfn to Vestmannaeyjar. Please note that the ferry usually sails every day, but the flights are limited throughout the week. If you have a rent-a-car, you can take it with you on the ferry and there is a free parking lot by the property you are staying at.

Herjólfur – ferry

Always keep yourself updated on the ferry schedule, especially during winter time.

Sometimes, the ferry has to sail from Þorlákshöfn (which is a shorter drive from Reykjavik, but a longer boat trip). In those cases you need to be aware of the different time schedule and location of departure/arrival on the mainland.
